What Can I Expect at a Unitarian Universalist Service?

Here are some frequent questions and answers for people who are thinking about visiting us for the first time. We'd like to thank the UU Fellowship in Stanislaus County, California, for the basics for this page.

What do adults wear?

Wear whatever is comfortable. Most people come dressed casually. Men usually wear slacks and a sports shirt. Most women wear slacks. On any given Sunday you can find people in jeans or shorts; you can also find people in suits.

What do children wear?

Children will be fine in sneakers, jeans and a tee shirt.

How do I get there?

We are on Glenburnie, just north of Neuse Boulevard, across from the BP station and Burger King. There is plenty of parking.

Will I be welcomed?

Yes. We have members who are rich and poor, black and white, young and old, straight and gay. We have Northerners, Southerners, Westerners, Baptists, Presbyterians, Catholics and life-long Unitarians.
We welcome them all. We will welcome you.

What goes on during the worship services?

Our usual service is fairly traditional. We usually stand for our hymns and for the closing words. We try to have a relaxed but meaningful service.

Should you attend one of our services that involves discussion of theological, moral and ethical values you will see how we live out our principle of a "free and responsible search for truth and meaning" as we share that search with each other. You are welcome and encouraged to participate.

Our basic service usually has:

Music

Welcoming Guests/Greeting of Neighbors

Hymn

Opening Words and Lighting of the Chalice

Sharing of Joys and Concerns

Responsive Reading, Silent Meditation

Morning Offering

Sermon

Hymn

Closing Words and Music

Coffee and conversation
